How ebooks, apps, Skype — the digital materials and tools coming to school and public libraries — change what youth service librarians do: What is changing? What is staying the same? What are the opportunities? How can the next generation of librarians change the field as young people grow up with swipes, clicks, and tablets along with page turns, citations, and textboks.

Marc Aronson, Ph.D., YA author and SC&I lecturer, and Evan St. Lifer, Vice President Digital Initiatives, Scholastic Library Publishing, share their thoughts and experiences.

Last Thursday night, I represented the Omicron Chapter at the SC&I Scholarship Donor Recognition Reception, held at the Livingston Campus Student Center. On everyone’s behalf I accepted our table’s centerpiece as a token of SC&I’s appreciation, which I share now with you, virtually.

I sat with two of our deserving 2011 scholarship recipients, Shanna Hollich and Anna Raya Rivera, who extend their gratitude and appreciation to everyone at Omicron. It was a delightful evening getting to know each of them better and meeting their spouses.

Shanna, Anna, Miraida, and Natalia: We wish you the best of luck in finishing your studies and your future careers and life paths!

A $1,000 scholarship from The Friends of the Monmouth Co. Library Association is being offered to Monmouth Co. residents for graduate study in library science/ information studies who have been accepted or are attending an ALA approved graduate program. Applications are available from Shirley Norby at snorby@verizon.net Applications must be received by Sept. 20, 2011.

1) The Beta Phi Mu General Assembly G-ALA (ALA Mtg #66241) will
take place in New Orleans, LA on Saturday, June 25th from 3:30 – 5:30 PM
in the Acadia Suite of the Royal Sonesta Hotel. The hotel is located in
the French Quarter @ 300 Bourbon Street, (504) 586-0300. If you are
planning to attend, please RSVP to betaphimuinfo@admin.fsu.edu. If you
have members who would like to be initiated during the General Assembly
G-ALA, please email their name and email address so that we can plan
accordingly. Also, for chapters sending a representative to the meeting,
please be prepared to present a brief Chapter Report (an overview of
chapter activities and news).

2) Beta Phi Mu is currently holding an Online Election for Vice
President/President-Elect and Director-At-Large. Beta Phi Mu members are
invited to cast their votes any time up until midnight, June 20, 2011.

Election results will be announced at the Beta Phi Mu General Assembly

Whether or not you are able to join us for the annual meeting/dinner tomorrow night, May 9th, at the Rutgers Club, please consider joining the Omicron Executive Board as Assistant Secretary/Treasurer. We would love to have you join us!

The Assistant Secretary/Treasurer:

Takes minutes at annual meeting for write-up/approval at next year’s meeting
Maintains files for archival purposes (electronic and paper)..
Answers membership-related questions by accessing archives
Is trained for Secretary/Treasurer position

Serving in the Omicron Chapter is a fun and enriching way to give back to the profession and support Rutgers MLIS students. We meet two to three times a year. The current EB is a mix of academic, public, school, and corporate librarians: come support us with your vision!
