Follow up from Annual Meeting

Greetings! We have received a copy of Dr. Cox’s talk from his presentation on April 17th. He also provided a copy of his doctoral seminar syllabus, “Academic Culture and Practice,” which might be of some interest, especially its lengthy set of readings. (Dr. Cox has noted that the copy of his talk is a working draft and asks that we forgive typos and other problems.)

SC&I Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner

You are warmly invited to attend another event, the SC&I Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner.

The dinner is scheduled for Thursday May 16th, 2013 at the Rutgers Club from 6:00-8:00 pm. The cost is $40 and includes dinner and dessert.  This year we are honoring Norma Blake, the immediate past New Jersey State Librarian.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Marie Radford (mradford@rutgers.edu) and include the number attending. Please send a check in the mail or hand it to me by May 10th.  The check can be made payable to SC&I Alumni Association.

SAVE THE DATE  The Omicron Chapter Annual Meeting and Dinner will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at the Rutgers Club.

Our guest speaker, Richard J. Cox, will offer the after-dinner talk, “The Ethics of Teaching, the Teaching of Ethics.” Dr. Cox is a Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Information Studies where he is the lead faculty member in the archives program. His work has earned him three Waldo G. Leland Awards for the best book in archival studies. Please join us!

ALA Scholarship deadline approaching!

The ALA Scholarship deadline is approaching fast so do not delay, apply now! Scholarship money is available for future librarians! ALA has more than $300,000 for students who are studying library science or school library media at the master’s degree level. Scholarships typically range from $2,500 to $7,000 per student per year. The application and instructions are available on-line at http://www.ala.org/educationcareers/scholarships . The application deadline is March 1, 2013.

2013 Scholarship Application Now Available!

The Omicron Chapter of Beta Phi Mu is especially proud of its mission to provide scholarships for current Rutgers School of Communication and Information (SC&I) students who are pursuing the master’s degree in library and information science.  Last year, we provided a $1,000 scholarship to each of three worthy recipients!

To be considered, please submit the 2013 Scholarship Application  form by March 1, 2013 to Maureen Smyth, preferably by email at maureen.smyth@gmail.com. If necessary, mail may be addressed to Maureen Smyth, Library, South Hunterdon Regional High School, 301 Mount Airy-Harbourton Road, Lambertville, NJ 08530. Best of luck!
